Forever in Blue Jeans (...giveaway...)

I've been wanting to make a denim quilt for years, so I've been slowly saving up our worn out jeans to cut and upcycle.  However, with 2 little boys, while they go through LOTS of jeans, their pants are LITTLE!  Since I was envisioning a rag quilt with 1/2" seams, I need rather large blocks of denim to cut out.

Then, last week, a co-worked gifted me a whole bag of worn out jeans from her husband.  I was so excited that I got started right away this weekend.  I dismantled jeans at my son's basketball game on Saturday (and got some strange looks for it, I might add).  I dismantled jeans while watching shows on Netflix.  I dismantled jeans while singing along with my favorite country music.  I'm surprised I can type today, as my right hand has been working overtime with those scissors!

This is about 1/2 of the cutting I have done.  I still have about 6 pairs of jeans to go.
I am backing the quilt with plaids.  I am making it for my oldest son who fancies himself a skateboarder, and who tells me that old ripped blue jeans and unbuttoned plaid shirts with t-shirts underneath are the unofficial uniform for skateboarders.  This quilt will mirror that "uniform."  I'm thinking of calling it "Skate Dreams."  However, since most of the denim is coming from the pants of my co-worker's husband, whose name is Sandy, I am also playing with the idea of calling it "Sandy Bottoms."

How about a quick giveaway?  Leave a comment with 2 things:  which name do you prefer for the quilt (Skate Dreams, Sandy Bottoms or come up with your own name if you have a creative brainstorm), and tell me which of the following you'd like to add to your stash - juvenile novelty fabric, neutrals, or stripes.  I'll pick a random winner on Friday, February 3 (my goal date for having the top completely pieced), and I'll send the winner 3 Fat Quarters from my stash of whichever type of fabric they said they wanted more of (novelty, neutrals or stripes).  My stash has outgrown my space for it, so it must be time to share.

I don't have a picture of the quilt yet, but how about a photo of what I've been doing with those odd bits left over from cutting that aren't big enough for a rag quilt - denim-backed bookmarks!
Denim and fabric fused together, sewn around the edges and trimmed with pinking shears.
I gave one to my co-worker already, made from her husband's jeans and with pig fabric on front (pigs are her favorite animal).  I've also pulled out some red bandanna fabric - wouldn't that be cool on the other side of the denim bookmark?

Naming a quilt is always so hard for me but you came up with two cool names. I think I like Sandy Bottoms. Just realized that to use my stash the way I want to - I need to get more neutrals!

I like Sandy Bottoms. Your son will love this quilt it will be the warmest quilt ever. I think I'd like stripes.

Sandy Bottoms is a brilliant name for the quilt. Neutrals for me please,, you can never have enough of those!

I like Skate Dreams. Last spring I made a quilt for my son out of my husbands old jeans, my son's worn out pj bottoms and scraps. I named it Sweet Dreams. I would love the novelty prints.

I love Sandy Bottoms-clever and catchy. And I love the bookmarks. And I would love the stripes, along with a sewing lesson-I want to try to make a cover for my Nook. (Yeah, I know you weren't planning on giving the lesson away, but I figure since you're my younger sister-I mean twin-you wouldn't mind.

I love the name Sandy Bottoms :D
Your bookmarkers are great - perfect way to use up scraps!
Juvenile novelty for me if I'm the lucky winner :)

I’ve made a few denim quilts in my time. If you think your hand hurts now wait until you rag your seams. But...they last practically forever and put up with a ton of abuse.

My favourite name is Sandy Bottoms . It sounds almost rude but isn’t and has a lot of meaning for you. Stripes for me if Im lucky !

I can just imagine the looks you got at the game. How about Dandy Damaged Denims or durable disabled denims ... debilitated ...decrepit? There might be some good "j" words to go with jeans. Are they all Sandy's? Your son needs a few of his own destroyed jeans in hos quilt too. I have a small pile of damaged denim too but I use it for patching jeans.

Skate Jeans - a variation on Skate Dreams - think it would be cool to go with the name you originally conceived as it will be used by your son too
A Jeans quilt is on my mother's bucket list - we have "stuff" saved for her to do so one day

Because the quilt is for your son Skate Dreams would be my pick. Stripes would be great if I am the lucky one you choose. Can't wait to see the finished quilt.

I think Skate Dream look cool and funky :)
I loves juvenile novelty fabric if I'm the lucky one :)

Sandy Bottoms is a really cool name and you will need to use it sometime. But since this quilt is for your son and you're making the quilt look like a skateboarder's outfit, I think you have to call it Skate Dreams (which is also a cool name). I would love some stripes.

I like both names and am not creative enough to come up with something else. If I won I would choose juvenile novelty.

I have been wanting to do a blue jeans quilt for awhile too. I am saving the old blue jeans myself.

I like the name "Sandy Bottoms" best.

Since I find myself attracted to bright fabrics, I am always shy of neutrals when I need them. I guess I would choose neutrals if I won.

I like Sandy B ottoms too. Very clever name. I am looking for more neutrals now to try and use up my stash.

I love the name Sandy Bottoms, but your son will probably vastly prefer Skate Dreams, so that will get my vote. I think I would choose the novelty FQs if I were the lucky winner - thanks fo rthe chance to win!

Sandy Bottoms and neutrals! Good idea to re-use old jeans...I have a pile under my table just sitting waiting to do the same thing!

I would call it Skateboard Dreams. It's for your son, and that's what he's dreaming of. And your progress is reminding me a a pile of saved jeans from my kids and family, that I was dreaming of making into a quilt. I'll have to pull them out and start cutting. My stash is short of neutrals, should I be the lucky winner.

How about Backside 180? Ask your son if he likes it.

Oh! And neutrals! :) Thanks for the giveaway chance!

I'm such a fan of puns, I have to go for Sandy Bottoms. As for what I'd add to my stash, any of the three would fit into one plan or another, so I'd be happy no matter what I won!

I like both names, but Sandy Bottoms is so clever it is my favorite.

I don't know what I need in my stash-I don't have very many interesting neutrals so I will say that, but I love stripes and want to make a quilt with novelty prints, so those would be great too.

Stripes! I love them for borders. Or dots. Those are fun also. Or neutrals because I can't make myself by them when there's so many prints out there...Guess I love everything! Love your "about me" blurb. Aren't our sons just the most handsome males on the planet?

Sandy Bottoms sounds like a great quilt name! I can't wait to see your quilt as hubby just gave me a stack of worn out jeans...and I need some ideas. I would choose stripes (just no pink please). Thanks for a chance to win! :)
