People often surprise me. Unfortunately, however, I am usually surprised in a bad way, and find myself asking, "How can someone be that selfish/cruel/ignorant/insensitive?" But every once in a while, someone surprises me in a positive way. Yesterday, I got just that kind of surprise.
There was a package from Em at Em Celebrates waiting for me when I got home. If you read yesterday's post, you know that she also sent a package to my boys. She's obviously a very generous soul. I figure everyone knows I go crazy for scraps, so I assumed that I had a bunch of new scraps to play with in this box.
Nope.
A quilt!
I was so stunned. No one has ever given me a quilt before. Well, little placemat sized quilts, which I adore, but my very own quilt to snuggle under? Never. I couldn't speak for a moment, and then I started to cry. I guess only a quilter knows how much work and inspiration goes into making a quilt, how much of yourself. And to have someone give that much of herself to me, well, I really don't know what to say. Thank you just doesn't seem like enough. Em, you are a gem.
(The fella under the quilt, that is my father-in-law, Fella. Yup, that's the name he goes by. Anyway, I was amazed at how well the colors of the quilt coordinate with my living room decor - if you can call my mishmash of furniture decor - so I draped it over the couch for a photo. He was napping, and never even woke up! And I left the quilt on him until I went to bed, and which point the quilt went to bed with me. I felt a little silly, carrying it around like a toddler with a security blanket, but I couldn't help myself. I very nearly brought it to work with me today. Not only is it beautiful, but it smells heavenly. Does your whole house smell like that, Em? What is that smell, and how can I make my house smell like that, too?)

Oh what a wonderful gift. The quilt is lovely. Just like you, I have never been given a quilt.
I can see why you didn't want to let it go! ENJOY!
You are so dang cute, ERIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You continue to enrich my days and this year. I giggle as I read about how the quilt smells. I have one fear in life and that is that my house will smell bad, very bad. I am addicted to yummy citrus candles, orange/clove potpourri in a fondue pot and use air fresheners of "Hawaiian Breeze" and "Fresh Linen." PHEW! If you win anothe game soon, I know what to surprise you with.... a bag of scraps :). or something yumma-licious! Thanks to God for hooking us up! Em
What a lovely gift!

Its a beauty.
Congratulations!!
( psssssst... and your husband is a hunk... shhhhhh don't tell him I said so :0) )
Happy sewing
Glad to hear that the fella is your FIL, I thought she threw in a live body to really suprise you!. Beautiful quilt, I am like you thrilled with the scraps. I have been organizing again today and my back is killing me. Brownie points for getting the store room semi- decluttered. It never ends. cw
Quilters are the best. Ive said it before and I will continue to say it to my dying day.
QUILTERS ARE THE BEST.

ps Fella looks so good under that quilt, I think you were mean [not really] to remove it....lol
Oh my the quilt is beautiful! I'm so glad we know Em. I love going on her adventures with her. Reminds me I need to post more with pictures.
I would have been crying to, not to mention carrying it around like a security blanket! What a fabulous and generous surprise.
Erin, did you read, Pocket Full of Sunshine post on my blog, may bring new meaning now.... Happy Weekend to you and I hope that you do not have to work!!!
What a great surprise! And you are right, it has to touch a quilter's heart. A friend of mine made me a T-shirt quilt with shirts with local logos just before we moved. It is so special to me...and like you I just love curling up with it and thinking of her and the love she put into it!
