My creative outlet changes how I view the world around me, influences the activities I pursue with my family, and introduces me to new people whose life paths wouldn't ordinarily intersect mine. My life is much like my favorite types of quilts - scrappy and unconventional, full of interest and surprises, and with an underlying current of making do (and making something beautiful!) with what I have.Vesuviusmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00799652624344875317noreply@blogger.comBlogger668125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4147280143371495318.post-50196701508659910012023-06-05T20:07:00.001-07:002023-06-05T20:07:29.784-07:00My September Bee Block - Scrappy Rainbow Twisted Pole Quilt<p> Wow, it's been over a year! It's been a busy time with a move to a new state, starting a new job, etc, but I haven't stopped creating. One of the things I've really enjoyed is making blocks each month for a bee that I belong to. Today's post will be the directions for my bee block for September (some people work really far ahead).</p><p>I believe the quilt block is called Twisted Pole. My goal is to make a scrappy rainbow quilt with a background of scrappy white fabrics with black print pattern and with "pole" fabric that is scrappy black fabrics with white print pattern.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpLexWY1E0VKoXMF2YrBPTSQLlHQ0c-XDByQSV6Chh5Y0UYy4boOAUnSth67PVzby-x3R7wEoNlGCOZyDLdx6IMW81i35hTwWlYaqoQIX0odStPdg7F6z30YGGZ3EIttUDJFu6-eK2Rq3Ra42r259X_diFMDSw6JT4TkRw7dRdIYJrT9BFT6DTQNpC/s640/twisted%20pole%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="413" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpLexWY1E0VKoXMF2YrBPTSQLlHQ0c-XDByQSV6Chh5Y0UYy4boOAUnSth67PVzby-x3R7wEoNlGCOZyDLdx6IMW81i35hTwWlYaqoQIX0odStPdg7F6z30YGGZ3EIttUDJFu6-eK2Rq3Ra42r259X_diFMDSw6JT4TkRw7dRdIYJrT9BFT6DTQNpC/s320/twisted%20pole%201.jpg" width="207" /></a></div><p>In the Bee, we make two 12" blocks to share, but for this quilt, the blocks are actually 9x15", and I'm asking that Bee members only assemble one block and send the 15 HSTs that make up the second block to me unassembled so that I can mix and match their HSTs with everyone else's so that no two blocks look the same.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHcBesKg5B0pSlJNY1fojNILqpBB1OTFIUsyCmJrpsDt7VoVOjTtrNN0cJKilZbczy52xN3aI0nKxIFN0ytTZwQw6IiUfoMmOh9aEKmohpcN2TI7yuFyjwF9tfgDGdO8xBNKgl5tuEyzwTflVH09xiwbah5jZWefBXgh9_lIvbRH8Rz3klP_J79sJ_/s640/twisted%20pole%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHcBesKg5B0pSlJNY1fojNILqpBB1OTFIUsyCmJrpsDt7VoVOjTtrNN0cJKilZbczy52xN3aI0nKxIFN0ytTZwQw6IiUfoMmOh9aEKmohpcN2TI7yuFyjwF9tfgDGdO8xBNKgl5tuEyzwTflVH09xiwbah5jZWefBXgh9_lIvbRH8Rz3klP_J79sJ_/s320/twisted%20pole%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Bee friends, first, choose a color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple) and cut 15 4" squares from 15 different fabrics of that color family. Fiber artists donate their unwanted stash (fabric AND yarn) and they resell it to the public super cheap. It is a dream come true for me! I take yardage there that I haven't cut into for years (and am therefore unlikely to ever cut into) and swap it for bags of quilting cotton scraps. The owner tells me I'm doing the world a service by taking other people's scraps, but I'll take a bag of scraps over a yard of one fabric any day! The bags of scrap fabric are called "Hot Garbage" but the contents are the furthest thing from garbage - those bags contain TREASURE!</p><p>I used some of those scraps finishing up this <a href="https://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/scrappy-trips-around-world.html" target="_blank">Scrappy Trips</a> quilt that I'm now binding for a friend who recently had surgery:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw1UX78UDHaI7SIIZtLtNpQMld3pSCI7SGYBr6IgYTbk5kbUs0z3DwYA3TtJ8ICqFkkS88RKumvap1HsoCEFL7_9A79MQpzlzsNx9HeL9mxzc-bH7vxj4H5zYHlisjqMrMeZkFx1Lp4ZsZEeQ_Ffo9GAbTZ4O5p2qRVZ6lZhroLEU9bBM3kQRttXp0/s1800/Jess%20quilt%20at%20moms.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1800" data-original-width="1440" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw1UX78UDHaI7SIIZtLtNpQMld3pSCI7SGYBr6IgYTbk5kbUs0z3DwYA3TtJ8ICqFkkS88RKumvap1HsoCEFL7_9A79MQpzlzsNx9HeL9mxzc-bH7vxj4H5zYHlisjqMrMeZkFx1Lp4ZsZEeQ_Ffo9GAbTZ4O5p2qRVZ6lZhroLEU9bBM3kQRttXp0/s320/Jess%20quilt%20at%20moms.JPG" width="256" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiDggpz517hAY_tPe7JL1PmHiMZpnv-AT9JjYCM6vbGoLFTAfTM0IGC6sscUgVAUV45zPR5PQQxU2u6DhB86E8piRjYQPLtHLke0hdoR-3v0OpPWGWW5zPKlfjI40W9uPiCFGdL68vQ9Sz3UHoS5pnobcQ4X7wBfyZ6xg9GxGAOSkEp4KvcV_l73iX/s4032/Jess%20quilt%20binding.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiDggpz517hAY_tPe7JL1PmHiMZpnv-AT9JjYCM6vbGoLFTAfTM0IGC6sscUgVAUV45zPR5PQQxU2u6DhB86E8piRjYQPLtHLke0hdoR-3v0OpPWGWW5zPKlfjI40W9uPiCFGdL68vQ9Sz3UHoS5pnobcQ4X7wBfyZ6xg9GxGAOSkEp4KvcV_l73iX/s320/Jess%20quilt%20binding.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div><p>I used some of those scraps to make my April Bee Blocks:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ-UhmWV1v-6h4Eo1Vj66XrkM6FLRLWwyE9iOvNwBWaUB_nUwD8YH5r32wBmm5ekHpRYfNs4bECH4jOQHFW1Z-p9P7YbOTxFDK0W5IfVS9eWo4ZotrLWUEIazGoBhJTk_ERwBYjNz0_plu0NTZ7k03J1N09uQ_t9tdBSb_P_ojNeQJS9W_ZPYpXlqW/s3785/april%20blocks.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1999" data-original-width="3785" height="169" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ-UhmWV1v-6h4Eo1Vj66XrkM6FLRLWwyE9iOvNwBWaUB_nUwD8YH5r32wBmm5ekHpRYfNs4bECH4jOQHFW1Z-p9P7YbOTxFDK0W5IfVS9eWo4ZotrLWUEIazGoBhJTk_ERwBYjNz0_plu0NTZ7k03J1N09uQ_t9tdBSb_P_ojNeQJS9W_ZPYpXlqW/s320/april%20blocks.heic" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I'm using the green and red scraps to make a non-traditional holiday/Christmas quilt using the <a href="https://www.bordercreekstation.com/the-stash-buster-challenge-2022.htm" target="_blank">Stashbuster 2022 pattern from Border Creek Station</a>:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZZeglHRJDcCepZdLoxUJmaR3aLp-rn_7KwlExZuz-Mqdgd2tcIBXgqKMQcTb1BoHCS-FBAJgnHR4oDmgGt_iw4NAtSGQvzNFEZKnjXkHXttW66YLsIDiTLpndP65cm1n_krqz-QGn8YRaK7Aa326su9vdr5BCsvvfwKttIqCg7Rdze1ksdC8K_k87/s1455/stashbuster%202022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1455" data-original-width="1440" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZZeglHRJDcCepZdLoxUJmaR3aLp-rn_7KwlExZuz-Mqdgd2tcIBXgqKMQcTb1BoHCS-FBAJgnHR4oDmgGt_iw4NAtSGQvzNFEZKnjXkHXttW66YLsIDiTLpndP65cm1n_krqz-QGn8YRaK7Aa326su9vdr5BCsvvfwKttIqCg7Rdze1ksdC8K_k87/s320/stashbuster%202022.JPG" width="317" /></a></div><p>And I am using those scraps to start a new Quarter Log Cabin quilt:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCHVDofs7Qqr0XhSM3e6x8sRxbeg5e7GV4_TpZxIvPhToPj7bI7GmRlb3Zjigkr55QF9du2j2_jV2Q-B2KaJl3Rk8fDeDR3qJ1evz6aijpBw82O2L7M__Xm5hQXeUnVOgk6enT9hn-o6v4gC2XFLp0cy30FQ56WtFLhBBb3_ohD0ZC8PGx8J32GQzG/s4032/quarter%20log%20cabin%2012.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCHVDofs7Qqr0XhSM3e6x8sRxbeg5e7GV4_TpZxIvPhToPj7bI7GmRlb3Zjigkr55QF9du2j2_jV2Q-B2KaJl3Rk8fDeDR3qJ1evz6aijpBw82O2L7M__Xm5hQXeUnVOgk6enT9hn-o6v4gC2XFLp0cy30FQ56WtFLhBBb3_ohD0ZC8PGx8J32GQzG/s320/quarter%20log%20cabin%2012.HEIC" width="320" /></a></div><p>I wish this weekend weren't at an end - all I want to do is sew! Time to give "facing" a try! I used this tutorial, and it was quite simple. When considering my (considerable) UFOs, my plaid string quilt seemed like a good option for them, based on <a href="https://www.morehouse.edu/about/services-and-administration/registrar/academic-policies/" target="_blank">Julie's beautiful creation.</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjFna5WrhXTkxB_0_kl4fMVD2BlsJcFIN3ZBeMZen202TJoXu-u8mcI6aq44vg-XQwgnLdYxBcjPP4inR710D2rf0DX4MnL1C_jbGpsHJjVI23sfrueERiybqGO6IoOGeuzviw2bUxl94DaYusnumzNZ35HYVzARUB2X_PdsQJw86WUgn22X9-oVD0S=s3042" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3042" data-original-width="2160" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjFna5WrhXTkxB_0_kl4fMVD2BlsJcFIN3ZBeMZen202TJoXu-u8mcI6aq44vg-XQwgnLdYxBcjPP4inR710D2rf0DX4MnL1C_jbGpsHJjVI23sfrueERiybqGO6IoOGeuzviw2bUxl94DaYusnumzNZ35HYVzARUB2X_PdsQJw86WUgn22X9-oVD0S=s320" width="227" /></a></div><br /><p>It's up on the design wall and I've completed a few more 9-patches and sashings, but man! Now I remember why I fizzled out with this quilt. I'm excited about how it is going to look, but it is so boring for me to create. Part of why I love scrap quilts is that there are so many different fabrics playing together. With this one, it's just plaid. I'm gonna do it, but I need something to spice up my sewing stints as well.</p><p>Today I finished my January Bee Blocks:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgMRIHBC6tJii8inh_hhsc0uj7UplwSTfwFPGb0UkAs_PMZqLMwS_oe4uybc7ekRpfLN5LFDEk7H15nbRnu1iFfHwYrkdK5YUcjNlnMNQZI4PKJdu8kvpiLrnSsNOVcjwLN2KQjg-MXKEv7m1IMrOJg7d24UZUjeVqyDeEJcGRFZsmFz_TXiIhQ9cpJ=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgMRIHBC6tJii8inh_hhsc0uj7UplwSTfwFPGb0UkAs_PMZqLMwS_oe4uybc7ekRpfLN5LFDEk7H15nbRnu1iFfHwYrkdK5YUcjNlnMNQZI4PKJdu8kvpiLrnSsNOVcjwLN2KQjg-MXKEv7m1IMrOJg7d24UZUjeVqyDeEJcGRFZsmFz_TXiIhQ9cpJ=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Finished sewing together all of the 2022 Stashbuster blocks that I had precut:</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg0-3TzD_hpD3BCzuiZSuaeVzovpsoP192PCU-yejeWx6FVV4Q-mJZG2_O-_NaK3a0xCQPJoRUskfYPsiGeQ_5Je6rslIRyVh4Y3cTNO0ZQ_xD67AUBlA2TlZTZuYqcp085seKJIgeFJuRxtePUnjWCm64u09NMWnqCnTuuhGLuCade-J_BOQ38SH3D=s2889" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2876" data-original-width="2889" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg0-3TzD_hpD3BCzuiZSuaeVzovpsoP192PCU-yejeWx6FVV4Q-mJZG2_O-_NaK3a0xCQPJoRUskfYPsiGeQ_5Je6rslIRyVh4Y3cTNO0ZQ_xD67AUBlA2TlZTZuYqcp085seKJIgeFJuRxtePUnjWCm64u09NMWnqCnTuuhGLuCade-J_BOQ38SH3D=s320" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I'm going for a non-traditional holiday quilt look</td></tr></tbody></table><p>And worked on this scrappy bear paw variation that I started over winter break:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhivt-gBsCwvO3a2lg01UGv-Gm9avje13hB-FwPOH0rDvVI8VMQv-bXrH7R3Egwh6m4RfhxgrswJvpOGL-g1PEEDIF_P3gnEtro3bgue-MeDKstPTqY4GxfHjQNBn8UEUzejM7KOzZpKt7OMC-4t8H6exNaX8IAQjUyeRUOS-VNXv-7WUU8OVv8yeI4=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhivt-gBsCwvO3a2lg01UGv-Gm9avje13hB-FwPOH0rDvVI8VMQv-bXrH7R3Egwh6m4RfhxgrswJvpOGL-g1PEEDIF_P3gnEtro3bgue-MeDKstPTqY4GxfHjQNBn8UEUzejM7KOzZpKt7OMC-4t8H6exNaX8IAQjUyeRUOS-VNXv-7WUU8OVv8yeI4=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I also did some purging, identifying some orphan blocks, some fabric and some thread that I plan to take to <a href="https://www.swansonsfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Swansons</a> to swap out for some quilting scraps, and along the way I unearthed some of the quilts I started hand quilting but never finished. On Saturday morning, I made my third trip to try my hand at longarm quilting a quilt. A couple years ago I suggested that our on campus art gallery invite <a href="https://cauchycomplete.wordpress.com/quilt-gallery/" target="_blank">quilter Chawne Kimber</a> to exhibit, and it is finally happening! The exhibit opens next Sunday evening. Unfortunately, she won't be accompanying her quilts, but I'm still pumped. I've been a fan for years, and I am most excited to see "The One for Eric G" in person. (for some reason, most of the photos on her blog are not showing up for me today; is it just me?)</p><p>I'm linking up with <a href="https://quiltingismorefunthanhousework.blogspot.com/2022/01/oh-scrap-nothing-much-to-share.html" target="_blank">Oh Scrap</a>.</p>Vesuviusmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00799652624344875317noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4147280143371495318.post-13113835381801522962022-01-06T18:59:00.004-08:002022-01-06T18:59:42.845-08:00I've been busy (but not blogging)I keep thinking I'm going to write a blog post, and never seem to get around to it. Instead, I read or knit or quilt. Which is good because those things all bring me joy, but it means that my record of my quilting progress is not up to date. Usually I go to my blog to figure out, "now when did I make THAT quilt?" but since I haven't posted in MONTHS, I'm at a bit of a loss. Let's see if I can piece together the last seven months or so - I've been productive!
In June, I tried my hand at longarm quilting for the first time. The recipient was so surprised - I love it when the quilt is unexpected like that!

I finished a baby quilt for a baby born in late December, and went back to the longarm to quilt it while also quilting another scrap quilt that I made over a decade ago:

I finally finished hand quilting my niece's baby quilt - regular quilting in the white, big stitch quilting with embroidery floss in the colors (she's going to be 4 in April):

I've been working on my Scrappy Trips Around the World quilt, thinking it will go to a friend who will be having surgery in March,

This weekend, I'm headed back to the longarmer to quilt this one for my twin sister who has made noises about the fact that she'd like a snuggle quilt for the couch. I love this one so I'm happy to keep it in the family.

And that's about it for my quilting the last couple of months. Lots of knitting and reading, too, plus I moved to Indiana in June. But then Facebook notified me about an event that might interest me (I find the algorithms and the tracking of my information unsettling, but this time it was helpful) - a Free Materials Swap sponsored by a fiber-lovers group in a nearby town. <p></p><p>Free fiber??? And a chance to clean out some of the things I have that I probably will never use?? Yesterday I packed two large tote bags with novelty fabric and some flannels and some yarn that was languishing in my stash, took the top off my Jeep, and set off for parts unknown under a bright blue late spring sky.</p><p>What a lovely way to spend the afternoon! I brought back one tote bag full of goodies with NO GUILT since I had given away twice that much AND I didn't spend a dime!</p><p>First, I got some fabric. My goal was to seek out neutrals in particular, scraps that caught my eye in general (yes, my scrap bin is still full, but I feel like I've seen and used all of those fabrics recently). Check out my haul!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YlwR86vq8Zo/YKMJx3RrZeI/AAAAAAAAClE/jnMoqXuyAo4GYhpxO4L6S4zGtcXJpGd6gCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/scraps.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YlwR86vq8Zo/YKMJx3RrZeI/AAAAAAAAClE/jnMoqXuyAo4GYhpxO4L6S4zGtcXJpGd6gCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/scraps.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Then, I snatched up some yarn: a sweater quantity of this rich purple bulky yarn (mystery fiber content, but definitely wool, possibly with some mohair mixed in):<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H_CtAs-R2v4/YKMJ4QiqLoI/AAAAAAAAClI/jkHSHMmPJwIP-vaqsdEiXrAM6pyJMsOxACNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/mystery%2Bpurple.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H_CtAs-R2v4/YKMJ4QiqLoI/AAAAAAAAClI/jkHSHMmPJwIP-vaqsdEiXrAM6pyJMsOxACNcBGAsYHQ/s320/mystery%2Bpurple.jpeg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">700 grams!!</td></tr></tbody></table><br /></p><p>And a couple singletons that I just couldn't pass up:<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ZsHDs3A3Ws/YKMKAl0q17I/AAAAAAAAClQ/L5dyW64suLA8XPADbPU-RUyt1KD7Ty5WgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/tosh%2Blace.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ZsHDs3A3Ws/YKMKAl0q17I/AAAAAAAAClQ/L5dyW64suLA8XPADbPU-RUyt1KD7Ty5WgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/tosh%2Blace.jpeg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Madeleine Tosh Lace!!</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X9wJui6QsJ4/YKMKAo1p0pI/AAAAAAAAClM/4GvJzK5gJUUbhVMunb_BEP19cDaEsZaNwCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/mystery%2Borange.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-X9wJui6QsJ4/YKMKAo1p0pI/AAAAAAAAClM/4GvJzK5gJUUbhVMunb_BEP19cDaEsZaNwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/mystery%2Borange.jpeg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Not sure what this is, but it is so soft and orange is my favorite color. One of the organizers kept saying, "Err on the side of GREED, we don't want leftovers!"😂</p><p>On top of that, going through my stash for things to get rid of also prompted me to add more destash fabric and yarn to <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MyPatchworkLife" target="_blank">my ETSY shop</a>.</p><p>Something about reorganizing puts me in the mood to CREATE, so I plan to sew tonight once my meetings are over.</p><p>Oh, and the cherry on top - one of the organizers owns a studio nearby where they rent longarm time. I've been looking for an opportunity to try quilting my own quilts on a longarm since I have SO MANY TOPS that need quilting and I much prefer hand quilting over my feeble efforts to machine quilt on my domestic machine. Back in November 2012, <a href="http://vesuviusmama.blogspot.com/2012/11/taking-action-wanna-help.html" target="_blank">I was inspired to make quilts for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy</a>. I asked if folks who read my blog wanted to help, and boy oh boy, what a response! Hundreds and hundreds of quilt blocks poured in from around the globe for months and we ended up donating more than 50 quilts. And then I ran out of steam. I eventually forgave myself for giving up - we all have our limits - but the problem was that I still had donated quilt blocks left. What to do with those? People donated them with the understanding that they would be made into quilts to give to those in need. I tucked them away while I pondered what to do with them...</p><p>And then I came across them again while looking for the Block Lotto blocks that I gave away in the Quilty Orphan Adoption event last week. I feel so guilty that they never became quilts to comfort those who were going through rough times.</p><p>But then I thought of all of you who threw your name in the hat for the Block Lotto blocks and all the charity sewing you do, and thought, hey, maybe I should offer the blocks to some of you doing charity work so that YOU can sew them into quilts to give to those in need. That way, they'll be used in the spirit in which they were given. Are you game? </p><p>If you want a set or two (or three, or more) of blocks to make quilts for charity in the US, let me know below. I'm trying to do some clearing out this week before school starts back again on Monday, so let me know in a comment 1) which set(s) of blocks you are interested in - don't be shy, if you are interested in all of them, just say so, I want them to go to someone! and 2) which charity you would be sewing for. (if you are a no-reply blogger, please include an email address so I can contact you). If more than one person is interested in a set, I'll let Random Number Generator decide who gets each set on Friday morning with the goal of all sets hopefully being mailed out by Saturday at the latest. I am happy to mail multiple sets to each interested person. Maybe then I can absolve myself of the lingering guilt over these unused blocks!</p><p><i>(Please know that with very few exceptions, I did not make these blocks so I cannot attest to their workmanship or fiber content. I can tell you that they have been in a smoke-free, dog-friendly home these past nine years. Please also know that I am not going to press the blocks before mailing - that is A LOT of pressing! And I'm only willing to mail to the US as this will add up to quite a bit of postage as it is.)</i></p><p>Set A: Eighteen 12.5" solid sampler blocks</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yzPHbeirdSw/YFrCddAPMJI/AAAAAAAACh0/hlyX5OrYx8MNaMjUi3EC0rIv8nfU2QcWgCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/solids.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I didn't sew nearly as much as I had hoped this week, but I did manage to finish my March Bee Blocks </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qw3jd44Lr7Y/YEWW9Q3kgfI/AAAAAAAACgU/ROSa3FS6NqEPTSAN3haA9Wxa6zf35mQagCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/march%2Bbee%2B1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="622" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qw3jd44Lr7Y/YEWW9Q3kgfI/AAAAAAAACgU/ROSa3FS6NqEPTSAN3haA9Wxa6zf35mQagCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/march%2Bbee%2B1.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ocgjNeWBIUo/YEWW9eLtUaI/AAAAAAAACgY/RO0-OTb72dggVWKFf7jLkwOK6e0t-RfnACNcBGAsYHQ/s640/march%2Bbee%2B2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="628" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ocgjNeWBIUo/YEWW9eLtUaI/AAAAAAAACgY/RO0-OTb72dggVWKFf7jLkwOK6e0t-RfnACNcBGAsYHQ/s320/march%2Bbee%2B2.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p>as I made some progress with the scrap pile. Of course, the bag doesn't look any less full, but I've cut quite a few more block components for my various projects. I think I'll pin pieces together so when I have a few minutes here and there this week I can get some blocks sewn up. I'm the type who usually just cuts the pieces for one block, then sews them together, rinse, repeat, not the type to cut out a whole quilt and then sew it all together, so having a bunch of pieces cut already is novel to me. If I sew up everything I have cut out already, that's quite a few more blocks to add. We'll see!</p><p>In other crafting news, I belong to a Buy Nothing Facebook group, and look at what I scored this weekend! I tied a quilt some years back with buttons, and have been itching to do that again, so I was keen to get more buttons, but some of these buttons really make me want to knit up a garment to feature them.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VF4uBckrfGU/YEWXEtt8lcI/AAAAAAAACgc/FOSt4ipPUfY2lzmmkd3fMSgXccxFPM4kwCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/button%2Bjar.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VF4uBckrfGU/YEWXEtt8lcI/AAAAAAAACgc/FOSt4ipPUfY2lzmmkd3fMSgXccxFPM4kwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/button%2Bjar.jpg" /></a></div><p>Some of my favorites:</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-095fcqDjY7I/YEWXLUmAVRI/AAAAAAAACgo/0xLc4P1mtbA-N4epwjMwVxh6S9lrfGTQQCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/button1.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-095fcqDjY7I/YEWXLUmAVRI/AAAAAAAACgo/0xLc4P1mtbA-N4epwjMwVxh6S9lrfGTQQCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/button1.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I love big buttons on hand knits</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vi9wvDWOfXQ/YEWXLVcT5uI/AAAAAAAACgg/XBCCI7G2VkEIql6-VPWRAYase3FtrXv-QCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/button2.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Vi9wvDWOfXQ/YEWXLVcT5uI/AAAAAAAACgg/XBCCI7G2VkEIql6-VPWRAYase3FtrXv-QCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/button2.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I can see this holding a cape closed at the throat</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8Y0EnWm1NdY/YEWXLQh4bpI/AAAAAAAACgk/1J9C2kMTmHU_kITk6SG4Wf648W55vSvfACNcBGAsYHQ/s640/button3.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8Y0EnWm1NdY/YEWXLQh4bpI/AAAAAAAACgk/1J9C2kMTmHU_kITk6SG4Wf648W55vSvfACNcBGAsYHQ/s320/button3.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I'm ready to knit up a cabled cardigan just to use these beauties!</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mqr5mADicpk/YEWXLzKL3hI/AAAAAAAACgs/9Jrg7-u8S0Ial3F653rpybhJ71GykNv5wCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/button4.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mqr5mADicpk/YEWXLzKL3hI/AAAAAAAACgs/9Jrg7-u8S0Ial3F653rpybhJ71GykNv5wCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/button4.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Can you say baby sweater??</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F_8sZvxc-jY/YEWXMEawmmI/AAAAAAAACgw/yXMljYM6tVs7F5Xpnz95H7qLsC6VIoOVwCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/button5.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F_8sZvxc-jY/YEWXMEawmmI/AAAAAAAACgw/yXMljYM6tVs7F5Xpnz95H7qLsC6VIoOVwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/button5.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">And who is this cute little critter? You know what that means, right? Yup, dropped everything else and started a baby quilt! Inspired by <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/499688521161431692/" target="_blank">a photo I saw on Pinterest</a>, I got my first nine blocks sewn up today. Blocks are 6.5" unfinished. I feel like I'm going through withdrawals! But I did find a couple moments to sew this week, and used that time to make an alternate block for my modified rail fence quilt that I'm making. Do you notice a difference?</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WBvi7d8lXbo/X_yU_ux57UI/AAAAAAAACbo/pVk29-gT2_08uwfzEGjX66SK45gll_63ACNcBGAsYHQ/s640/modified%2Brail%2Bfence1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WBvi7d8lXbo/X_yU_ux57UI/AAAAAAAACbo/pVk29-gT2_08uwfzEGjX66SK45gll_63ACNcBGAsYHQ/s320/modified%2Brail%2Bfence1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before - all blocks the same</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DkLuKlMhQa4/X_yVDqA5QYI/AAAAAAAACbs/u4RNka8hP4soknOOUoPtGIiEQ0UxocAUwCNcBGAsYHQ/s1545/rail%2Bfence%2Bw%2Balternate%2Bblocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1545" data-original-width="1447" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DkLuKlMhQa4/X_yVDqA5QYI/AAAAAAAACbs/u4RNka8hP4soknOOUoPtGIiEQ0UxocAUwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/rail%2Bfence%2Bw%2Balternate%2Bblocks.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">After - half the blocks w/ HST flipped</td></tr></tbody></table><p>I didn't like the way the neutrals switched sides as you followed the HST zig zag trail, so I am making half of the blocks with the HSTs reversed so that the neutrals stay on the same side (bottom and right) throughout one zig zag. It started with a mad dash to make a memory quilt for a friend who lost her beloved dog. I had six pages of printer fabric sheets, so I found some photos of her pup online and made a quick quilt for her. She is TALL and I wanted her to be able to cuddle in it, so it is pretty large, about 65"x 98". I can't make a quick quilt that big using my usual little pieces, so the blocks are huge, each finishing at 31.5" square. What a departure for me! Probably not something I'll do again, but she really appreciated it so mission accomplished.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; I thought I was busy the last three years here - ha! I barely have time to eat or use the restroom this year! But the first round of college applications have been submitted, so I am finally feeling like I can stop and breathe. The students leave for an extended break on Friday, at which point I hope to spend more time reading and knitting and quilting.</p><p>I have gotten a few things done in the last few months, though, by making sure I make time for me, even if it is just 15 minutes of sewing or knitting every day.</p><p>Just today, I finished piecing a top for a friend's daughter whom she will be adopting into her family in just a few weeks.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Having too much fun sewing, hand quilting, knitting and reading, I guess! It's still an abnormal summer with the amount of work I've had to do for my job (supposedly I don't work in the summer, but I've had meetings every week, sometimes up to four days a week!), but I've been making time to relax and read in the hammock, be productive in my sewing room, and do some slow stitching parked in front of a screen.<div><br /></div><div>I finished the churn dash top and picked out a backing from my stash. I have one more top to finish and quilt up and then these two quilts will go to a set of sisters who are in the process of being adopted by a friend of mine.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vekuPrWWyxs/XyRxv94TKrI/AAAAAAAACTs/DP9nFbRTYrobdacFdy1O1vmyJ-8HQ2L8gCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/churn%2Bdash%2Btop.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vekuPrWWyxs/XyRxv94TKrI/AAAAAAAACTs/DP9nFbRTYrobdacFdy1O1vmyJ-8HQ2L8gCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/churn%2Bdash%2Btop.JPG" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I quilted, bound and delivered the Giant Pineapple quilt, finishing up just 30 minutes before the baby shower when it was to be presented. I decided on a combination of hand and machine quilting, echo quilting by machine around the pineapple and hand quilting with perle cotton inside the pineapple. I bound it with the same fabric that I used for the backing. The end result is far from perfect, but I am hoping it gets lots of use for tummy time and picnics with the baby.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--KGJ59_zjs0/XyRx52upMhI/AAAAAAAACTw/di9amikQ6-on5_D1kTFFKJDLDGjLrJ6CgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Big%2Bstitch%2Bperle1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--KGJ59_zjs0/XyRx52upMhI/AAAAAAAACTw/di9amikQ6-on5_D1kTFFKJDLDGjLrJ6CgCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/Big%2Bstitch%2Bperle1.JPG" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XZMLBgJrfOU/XyRx6MECxxI/AAAAAAAACT0/h2_5syL7F0gbA6krN4LSdHkQ80zjTatqwCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/giant%2Bpineapple%2Bquilted.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XZMLBgJrfOU/XyRx6MECxxI/AAAAAAAACT0/h2_5syL7F0gbA6krN4LSdHkQ80zjTatqwCNcBGAsYHQ/s640/giant%2Bpineapple%2Bquilted.JPG" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Big stitch quilting with perle cotton was so fun, I pulled out this quilt to quilt the stars using the same method and my big stash of perle cotton. It is getting easier to let go as I contemplate how long different yardage has been sitting unused in my stash. I only ever seem to use yardage for backings, preferring to reach for my scraps when piecing, so it doesn't make sense for yardage to sit around unused. This week, I said good bye to this eclectic assembly of fabrics in hopes that they will finally get cut up and put into someone else's quilts:</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n1GXiaqRKAk/XyRzhEbs7PI/AAAAAAAACUg/hK9-b4L0UNwNcHOHzBYQ_HPF4Z86gKIxACNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/gray1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n1GXiaqRKAk/XyRzhEbs7PI/AAAAAAAACUg/hK9-b4L0UNwNcHOHzBYQ_HPF4Z86gKIxACNcBGAsYHQ/w200-h200/gray1.JPG" width="200" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lTIpV2L3HXY/XyRzhOt8n-I/AAAAAAAACUc/UCSxZdkl4jkrRtGdveM05eqiuU88yI4cgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/pink%2Bwood2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lTIpV2L3HXY/XyRzhOt8n-I/AAAAAAAACUc/UCSxZdkl4jkrRtGdveM05eqiuU88yI4cgCNcBGAsYHQ/w200-h200/pink%2Bwood2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6pgmHmbCfoo/XyRzh5AlDxI/AAAAAAAACUk/QczJBL7woLEwBPpaGWY1duZMJU3_is53QCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/rose2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6pgmHmbCfoo/XyRzh5AlDxI/AAAAAAAACUk/QczJBL7woLEwBPpaGWY1duZMJU3_is53QCNcBGAsYHQ/w200-h200/rose2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fPsnoP7q5WI/XyRziINCVDI/AAAAAAAACUo/9EpV52E6jYM_BzS7JlhAMOVOgY9S7E_7ACNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/swirls2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="150" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fPsnoP7q5WI/XyRziINCVDI/AAAAAAAACUo/9EpV52E6jYM_BzS7JlhAMOVOgY9S7E_7ACNcBGAsYHQ/w200-h150/swirls2.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s0tDlJCerOA/XyRzmpOgI_I/AAAAAAAACUs/lV8ZpqfR9e4SdQfrPn50r16bqvBc6wv2gCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/border1a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="150" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s0tDlJCerOA/XyRzmpOgI_I/AAAAAAAACUs/lV8ZpqfR9e4SdQfrPn50r16bqvBc6wv2gCNcBGAsYHQ/w200-h150/border1a.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>I'm looking forward to spending some (social distanced) time outside with family as my sister hosts her annual Lammas Day celebration tomorrow, albeit only with my twin sister and me and our families. Much of it is found in my hammock...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DlrbkTDxaAE/Xw0alO9tcsI/AAAAAAAACTA/iHKTO0L8Af0PuY_pzKUzP8t7MGOY8hQ1ACNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/hammock.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DlrbkTDxaAE/Xw0alO9tcsI/AAAAAAAACTA/iHKTO0L8Af0PuY_pzKUzP8t7MGOY8hQ1ACNcBGAsYHQ/s320/hammock.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
...where I've soundly crushed my goal of reading 24 books this year. To date, I've read 66 books, so my new goal is 100 books. I'm currently reading Michelle Alexander's <i>The New Jim Crow</i> and Elizabeth Gilbert's <i>City of Girls</i>, two books that couldn't be any more different from each other.<br />
<br />
I'm also making great progress on the quilts I am making for others. I'm two-thirds done with this floating churn dash and am absolutely loving making it. I thrive off of making scrap quilts, and love when there is no limit on the colors I am using.<br />
<br />

I also spent a day this weekend adding more of my yarn stash to <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/people/Vesuviusmama" target="_blank">my Ravelry account</a> and adding the final singleton skeins of yarn left over from when I sold my yarn shop three years ago to <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MyPatchworkLife" target="_blank">my ETSY shop.</a> <br />

<br />
It feels good to organize things, especially when so much of life seems out of my control these days.<br />

There's always a reason for a new start...but I have no good reason for not finishing things.<br />
<br />
So, I was focusing on my Jewel Box Stars quilt when I realized I needed some more variety in my neutrals. While seeking out more neutrals, I got to thinking about <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/499688521158605134/" target="_blank">a quilt pattern on ETSY that I had pinned on my Pinterest page</a> as something to make one day. If I'm pulling neutrals for one quilt, I might as well pull for another quilt at the same time, right? Well, one thing led to another. I had to try a block out...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-db-OghGGbA4/XwOfu850j7I/AAAAAAAACRo/SQTA-pmofiIGxaipuhjKUHf74D82nkLPwCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/churn%2Bdash.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-db-OghGGbA4/XwOfu850j7I/AAAAAAAACRo/SQTA-pmofiIGxaipuhjKUHf74D82nkLPwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/churn%2Bdash.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then I had to make a couple more...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G8kpV75BFiU/XwOhvXnzIQI/AAAAAAAACR8/T5wpOzXgTZgSUV2mU-hA-YL1nAKohF7tgCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/churn%2Bdash%2B14.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G8kpV75BFiU/XwOhvXnzIQI/AAAAAAAACR8/T5wpOzXgTZgSUV2mU-hA-YL1nAKohF7tgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/churn%2Bdash%2B14.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
So, yeah, my Jewel Box Stars is back to being a Leaders and Enders quilt while I have fun with this one. The good news is, I've unearthed lots more neutrals to use in my Jewel Box Stars...<br />
<br />
It has rained a lot lately, which we needed. The garden is starting to produce - yummy lettuce and snap peas and flowers so far. When it isn't raining, I spend much of my time outside, in the shade, either in the hammock or on a quilt in the yard, reading or listening to an audiobook while I knit. (I love summer!)<br />
<br />
Much like with my quilting, I try to knit and crochet using up my stash rather than buying new. So when one of my four-year-old crocheted dishcloths came out of the dryer miserably distorted and with three holes in it, I dug through my stash to find cotton to make another.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2bKncC_XzlU/XwOhzh50WpI/AAAAAAAACSA/77bVx7S-VaUcM11XZPioyMH0WERHjFkfwCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/old%2B%2526%2Bnew%2Bdiscloths.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2bKncC_XzlU/XwOhzh50WpI/AAAAAAAACSA/77bVx7S-VaUcM11XZPioyMH0WERHjFkfwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/old%2B%2526%2Bnew%2Bdiscloths.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Vesuviusmama/diagonal-dishcloth" target="_blank">Pattern</a> for Diagonal Dishcloth</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And I had started a knit project last September that I wasn't feeling anymore, so I frogged it and started something new.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HeDRODtSDS8/XwOiaIbUxqI/AAAAAAAACSM/t3JOrBTZulgjdnCcRXVKB_C1lSrwJ_JgACNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/red%2Bponcho1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HeDRODtSDS8/XwOiaIbUxqI/AAAAAAAACSM/t3JOrBTZulgjdnCcRXVKB_C1lSrwJ_JgACNcBGAsYHQ/s320/red%2Bponcho1.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pattern for Dressy Poncho</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
All in all, it has been a wonderfully crafty week for me, even if there aren't any finishes (except the dishcloth).<br />

I'm trying to set boundaries and remind people that I am not a 12-month employee, but with the pandemic requiring us to rethink how we are going to conduct school next year, I guess it is understandable that I'd be called upon more often than in a usual summer.<br />
<br />
I let people know, however, that I was going to rural New Hampshire last week to spend a socially distant week with my sisters and their families (how weird not to hug and to only interact outdoors and on screened in porches, but we do what we must to keep everyone healthy), and I spent a blissful week (mostly) unplugged.<br />
<br />
I read, I played games, I swam, I hiked, I knit. I didn't sew, but I made up for lost time this weekend when I returned - my leader and ender Jewel Box Stars quilt is now a front burner project and is coming along nicely.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JI8hPr60aOQ/XvqI72IplBI/AAAAAAAACQ8/E5VfOK2XuKYOCjihbPJ1UX6CYdFRBpTwwCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/jewel%2Bbox%2Bstars%2B15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JI8hPr60aOQ/XvqI72IplBI/AAAAAAAACQ8/E5VfOK2XuKYOCjihbPJ1UX6CYdFRBpTwwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/jewel%2Bbox%2Bstars%2B15.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Two more rows to go!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Today, I hopped back on the computer to catch up on all the work that piled up in my absence, and then I spent some time culling more yardage from my stash for <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/mypatchworklife" target="_blank">my ETSY shop</a>. As I'm sure you can tell from my quilts, I rarely use yardage (scraps are where it is at for me, baby!), so it is silly of me to have so much. And since my sewing room is also my home office (and who knows when I'll be going back to my real office), it is important for me to make space so that I don't feel claustrophobic or distracted. Some of the fabric is easy for me to give up, but some I really wrestled with myself over. For example, my Ghastlies fabric... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cM40IXsyVrA/XvqLHLImHCI/AAAAAAAACRM/iSdCRZqVeNcynfwPlSl73fT6tYQMQ9vZgCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/ghastlie%2Bnight1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cM40IXsyVrA/XvqLHLImHCI/AAAAAAAACRM/iSdCRZqVeNcynfwPlSl73fT6tYQMQ9vZgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/ghastlie%2Bnight1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0wATWEh_QSU/XvqLHACqbmI/AAAAAAAACRI/Shsh0cmml1IA59BGqxhg9nzaOv6kUH2JwCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/gray%2Bghastlie1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0wATWEh_QSU/XvqLHACqbmI/AAAAAAAACRI/Shsh0cmml1IA59BGqxhg9nzaOv6kUH2JwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/gray%2Bghastlie1.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Truly, it is this image that made me want this fabric - in two colorways!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It is out of print and hard to come by, but I've just been sitting with it for nearly a decade! Am I ever going to use it? Probably not. So I posted it - at a higher price than my usual destash fabric, but not nearly as high as others have posted it (one person had a yard listed for $75!!). I'd rather someone else put it to use than for it to sit unused in my stash.<br />

Her recovery is far from over, but we are so thankful that she is out of the woods!!<br />
<br />
I've been trying to discipline myself to finish things up rather than start more new things. I got the pineapple baby quilt top pieced together and basted, now just contemplating how to quilt it.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Not sure yet how I will quilt it...but it is basted and ready to go!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I put a skinny border on my cross-patch quilt, and am trying to decide if that is it. I think so...but I'm going to let it sit for a while.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rd16Sf1WKNw/XugZXBfVwbI/AAAAAAAACPo/LM7AGjKB8pcMOKoQbdUtVntkjvU6U7wJgCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/cross%2Bpatch%2Btop.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rd16Sf1WKNw/XugZXBfVwbI/AAAAAAAACPo/LM7AGjKB8pcMOKoQbdUtVntkjvU6U7wJgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/cross%2Bpatch%2Btop.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I don't think I want to add more borders, but I'm not sure. Gonna revisit this in a little bit.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I pulled out my 2018 temperature quilt top. I've been trying to figure out what to do for borders. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KtmTWMj3PBw/XugZnlyVucI/AAAAAAAACP4/s-cKhcrabkk7Z1xfEXJlEUPvf5HoU7ZHwCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/2018%2Btemp%2Bwo%2Bborders.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KtmTWMj3PBw/XugZnlyVucI/AAAAAAAACP4/s-cKhcrabkk7Z1xfEXJlEUPvf5HoU7ZHwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/2018%2Btemp%2Bwo%2Bborders.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I have SO MUCH Kona solid left after making this project!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
At first I thought I'd do a border that had all 32 of my Kona fabrics that I bought for this quilt around the outside, but I got two sides done and didn't like it, so instead I pulled the two fabrics that represent the yearly average high and low temperatures, and used those as borders. DONE! Now to baste and quilt.<br />

Can you tell I've also been spending a lot of time outdoors? Lots of reading going on, too! According to my Goodreads account, I've read and/or listened to 55 books so far this year. My goal of 24 books in 2020 was obviously too modest. Maybe I can read 100?<br />

But seeing what is happening in the US this week while social distancing is particularly trying. How many times have I said, "thank goodness for quilting?" It helps to calm my mind and my nerves. And this week, my efforts have been towards creating yet another baby quilt for a little one who is due at the end of August.<br />
<br />
I ran across t<a href="https://stashbandit.net/the-giant-pineapple-quilt-instructions/" target="_blank">he Giant Pineapple Quilt by the Stash Bandit</a>, and decided to go with another pineapple quilt (<a href="http://vesuviusmama.blogspot.com/2019/02/crushing-my-goals.html" target="_blank">remember the ones I made a little over a year ago?</a>). I started with 7" squares, so my finished block size will be 5.5", so I guess that will make a quilt that is approximately 33" x 44".<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oAPa9Xcxoyg/XtRwAESK8TI/AAAAAAAACO4/tK65UOO3gTYbla4nmgP1My_GdIvdEsX5QCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/giant%2Bpineapple1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oAPa9Xcxoyg/XtRwAESK8TI/AAAAAAAACO4/tK65UOO3gTYbla4nmgP1My_GdIvdEsX5QCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/giant%2Bpineapple1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For those who read last week, my sister-in-law is out of the ICU, but still hospitalized. Progress.<br />
<br />
And I braved my fear of crowds and COVID19 today to take my boys to a Black Lives Matter vigil (masked up and keeping 6 ft distance from others as much as possible).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s4OY31OyoEM/XtRwIaUrVHI/AAAAAAAACO8/5f40NbFp9hQN9wcs4pb-Cc4Sxn-cbEagQCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/black%2Blives%2Bmatter%2Bamherst.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s4OY31OyoEM/XtRwIaUrVHI/AAAAAAAACO8/5f40NbFp9hQN9wcs4pb-Cc4Sxn-cbEagQCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/black%2Blives%2Bmatter%2Bamherst.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">These are my sons, ages 17 and 14</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
What breaks my heart is that this isn't the first vigil my boys have attended. Protesting murders has been a mainstay in their lives since we first took them to Washington DC in July 2013 to protest the murder of Trayvon Martin. What kind of world is this that my kids have been protesting the murder of black people by the police and white citizens who take it upon themselves to "police" us for fully half of their lives?<br />

This makes three. We are hoping that yesterday's plasma transfusion does the trick and she recovers quickly. I've been finding it hard to breathe lately, but I know it is just anxiety. Just, I've had enough, you know?<br />
<br />
So I turned to that which gets me through all the moments in my life when I need to calm my thoughts - quilting. My color words quilt has been languishing for months now, basted and ready for quilting. In fact, the recipient is already a month old now! So this weekend, I cleaned my machine and put in a new needle, and quilted it. I'm a hand quilter, new to machine quilting, so simple wavy and straight stitches for me. I like how it turned out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9J4VWOU2il8/XssqypsGFLI/AAAAAAAACOA/ktxfs86ORVYRCtK_7LfkbQTNsjfrEwHcQCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/color1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9J4VWOU2il8/XssqypsGFLI/AAAAAAAACOA/ktxfs86ORVYRCtK_7LfkbQTNsjfrEwHcQCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/color1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, after sewing the binding onto the front, I headed outside to sew the back down in the sunshine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P5xdSTNAyRY/Xssq6ZqGiUI/AAAAAAAACOE/U1L53ojJolomA45N2JUGnA2x3aS3UZJbQCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/color2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P5xdSTNAyRY/Xssq6ZqGiUI/AAAAAAAACOE/U1L53ojJolomA45N2JUGnA2x3aS3UZJbQCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/color2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I even remembered to make a label and attach it when I attached the binding.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QmREdirMAIk/Xssq--Oga4I/AAAAAAAACOI/45ls0qTL8_oGyTm8wdUZCwVzhpoAt3EkgCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/color7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QmREdirMAIk/Xssq--Oga4I/AAAAAAAACOI/45ls0qTL8_oGyTm8wdUZCwVzhpoAt3EkgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/color7.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It will go out in Tuesday's mail - I hope the mama (and baby) likes it.<br />

Nothing happening in my life other than work, reading and quilting, and I've been working on the same quilt for weeks now. It is growing slowly, and bringing me great joy, a true scrap quilt that has me digging into piles and drawers looking for smaller scraps to use up and combine in fun ways.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LZdyLiXKRCM/XrCvwjtA1VI/AAAAAAAACNE/BIBsm5udX0wX16_gWaJaBSUxT62avzT7gCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/cross%2Bpatch%2B16.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LZdyLiXKRCM/XrCvwjtA1VI/AAAAAAAACNE/BIBsm5udX0wX16_gWaJaBSUxT62avzT7gCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/cross%2Bpatch%2B16.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course, I imagine most everyone's life is like that these days, one day looking much like the day before. Thank goodness for books to give me some excitement, whether I am reading in the hammock like I did this weekend, or listening to an audiobook while I stitch.<br />
