Recently I've undertaken an effort to provide some warmth and comfort in the form of quilts to those were affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey, and I've been so blessed by quilters all around the world, sending enough blocks and completed quilts to donate more than 3 dozen quilts so far. You can see an up to date list of all the ANGELS who have helped with my project over there on the right under the heading MY HEROES. Understandably, I joined this Blog Hop so I could give a little something back and to say THANK YOU!
Since I've been working on the Hurricane Sandy Project, there have been quite a few projects that have been moved to the back burner for a while. The longer they sit there, the more I want to get back to them. One that has really been calling to me, and that also very much illustrates my quilting style, is my color quilt. Using 1.5" precut squares of scraps, I have been spelling out color words with scraps of that color. I have no idea yet how I'm going to put them together, but that is par for the course with me. Here's what I have so far:
THE GIVEAWAY!
Do you have projects that you look forward to getting back to eventually? If so, leave a comment letting me know what that project is. Or are you one of those amazing people who has no UFOs, who always finishes what you start? If so, leave a comment and let me know your secret! Either way, I'll enter you into my drawing. I'm a visual person so links to photos of projects are encouraged, but certainly not required. Just one comment per person, please. I'll leave the giveaway open until 6 AM EST, Monday, December 17. That's when I get up for work. It'll help me get out of bed on a cold, dark Monday morning if I have something fun to look forward to other than my job (which I love, but which I love a little less at 6 AM on Monday mornings).
The winner will receive a package of over 150 assorted 2.5" scrap squares,
plus, three approximately half-yard cuts of a fabric that a co-worker brought back from abroad for me (I believe from India) that I love, but can't for the life of me figure out what to do with.
She brought back a yard of each, so half goes to you, and half stays with me. I'm hoping to be inspired by what someone else does with it.

Oh, I have a ton that I hope to get back to. However, there's one in the back of the closet, a baby boy blanket, that hasn't even made the UFO list that I'd like to finish at some point.
ReplyDeleteI have dozens of ufo's, but the one that is really screaming at me to work on again is my Jubilee quilt. I finished the front, and am working on the pieced back, but I stalled on it back in the summer, and it's still on the design wall! I only have until February to finish it! Yikes! I really need to get a move on!

ReplyDeleteI have too many UFO's to list just one that is calling out to me, but I guess it would have to be a green and purple card trick quilt top that I made to go with a new chair that we purchased. The quilt top is not quilted yet, and we don't even own the chair anymore!
OH - my UFOs are driving me crazy! Recently I just decided to sit and sew and get the tops done. It's actually rather satisfying and I did finish a set of blocks that I started back in '08.
ReplyDeleteI've put the quilting to the back burner and I'm trying to empty some project boxes. I would like to get back to quilting to finish a BOM from about 2008. My FMQ skills are improving but I still have trouble getting started, you know, deciding how to quilt the tops.
My very first quilt is still a UFO: it is bound, but not fully quilted. I use it as my test quilt, to test marking techniques, quilting techniques, etc. I started working on it in high school! It was even on my bed during grad school (unbound, I think!), and the sun damaged the color on one end. Oops. Then there is the quilt I started as my own wedding quilt... and it's been sitting in my closet, just over half quilted, for the last 14 years. I admit, I got bored with it.
ReplyDeleteI have an English paper pieced Grandmother's Flower Garden that I started when I was married and had a king sized bed. I am divorce with a smaller bed so it should be easier to finish.
ReplyDeleteI do try to finish what I start, but it doesn't always work out. There really isn't a secret for me, I really just enjoy seeing the finished project and I like the feeling of accomplishment that comes along with taking that last stitch. My UFO pile is always changing. I usually make quilt tops when I just feel like sewing scraps together. I donate them to go to my local shelter when I finish them later in the year. This year, my pile of unfinished tops was fairly tall but I was able to quickly turn them into completed quilts for Hurricane Sandy victims. I still have a few UFO tops to finish for my local shelter that I'll get around to finishing up one day after the holidays.
ReplyDeleteIf you lived in a rabbit hutch like I do, there would be no place to store those UFOs and you would finish them up. I see you have cut those little squares just for me. You already know how I love to use them and that I just made room in that tin with a couple of projects.
ReplyDeleteI have many UFOs and I'd like to get back to all of them. The two at the top of my list right now are my DD # 3's quilt and my colours quilt, both of which need backing and quilting. I am collecting 2.5 inch squares though for another scrappy quilt I want to start...
ReplyDeleteBecause my cottage is tiny I tend to piece a pile of projects and then hire the village hall to layer and spray baste the lot. I then quilt at my leisure, I really need to finish joining the blocks of a Log Cabin Quilt, it has been frowning at me for nearly 6 months and should be on my bed not the WIP pile. Oh and BTW I have a box of 2 1/2 inch squares for a scrap vomit quilt just yearning to have more added.

I went to a quilt retreat in October and brought along 4 projects to work on. I'd like to get back to any one of them. BTW, your blog is one I look forward to reading. All you do always amazes me and makes me feel like a slug-a-bed.

I prefer to keep a list out and keep the projects in a drawer so they don't visually overwhelm me...would like to finish some quilted cupcake place mats for my sister in law for Christmas...and hand quilting a scrappy feed sack quilt that was found in my husbands grandmother's attic. ReplyDeleteI have two quilt tops that are finished, but I just can't get to them before Christmas. I also have a quilted Tree Skirt top that has needed to be finished for about ten years. I just drape it around the tree trunk and put presents on any exposed edges - isn't that awful!?! I am terrified of cutting that hole in the middle :-(
I'm looking forward to binding my youngest daughter's quilt. It's been away with the quilter for far too long.

ReplyDeleteI have a whole stack of quilt tops that need to be quilted. I recently purchased a long arm machine but an not good enough at it yet to risk messing up one of my good tops. Maybe after the holidays I'll have a little more time to practice.

ReplyDeleteAlso, I think the one-yard lengths of the Indian fabric may be really nice for the backing of a lap quilt or make a nice top.
I was working on several BoM's earlier this year plus had just started quilting my "Atlantis Rising" quilt when was diagnosed with cancer. Once am through my treatments will be finishing off most of these right away.
ReplyDeleteHave kept up (or almost kept up) with a few of the BoM's but other were packed away.
I just finished binding a quilt that took about 4 years to complete. First, it was a scrappy Christmas pinwheel quilt, but I had no scraps. So I had to collect them. Then I had to cut them. Then sew them. Then piece them. When the quilting part came, the quilt was too big to force through my sewing machine. So I waited patiently until my good husband saw fit to be okay with me getting a long arm. This was first quilt I quilted on it, back in February. Then it sat. But just this weekend I got the binding on and its now complete, just in time for Christmas! Whew - sorry to be so long winded.

ReplyDeleteMy UFO list is a mile long, but the big project I'm anxious to get back to is my series of thread painted dog portraits. I started them so long ago, that one of the dogs has died since then and we have two new dogs!
Oh My Gosh, do I have unfinished projects I want to get back to. It's a VERY LONG LIST, so, I'll just name a few things on it. Finish handquilting (about 300 hours left) my MIL's quilt. Quilt 2 kitty quilts as gifts, finish my son's and nieces graduation quilt tops (they graduated last May, Oops!). That is just a start on my UFO's.

ReplyDeleteWell, I must confess, my "list" of unfinished (and never started) projects is pretty long. I don't dare write it down, so my list is not on paper anywhere but exists only in my mind. However, even without an actual list, the projects still have voices. The one that seems to be hollering at me from the back of my mind most often lately is a memory quilt for my brother and I to share about our dad. It's almost designed. LOL. I have the plan and the items I need to set up that dedicated space to leave my machine out, but I'm short on... yes, time!

For me it's so tempting to start a new project with very little thought of the UFO's! I'm going to be a little more grown up about it and finish this week a pink cat quilt that I started several years ago.

I have one real UFO which is wrapped and stored away. And I have two quilts in progress, one actual project and one leader-and-ender (I use Bonnie Hunter's Scrap User's System, too!) and a hexagon handsewing project which will eventually turn out a Grandmother's Flowergarden. I think I'd cut a lot of hexies from your Indian fabric!
I have three separate sets of blocks all finished, waiting to be sashed and quilted. I would love to get at least one done!

ReplyDeleteI have a number of UFOs --2 full shelves of them! Every once in awhile, in between new projects, I pick something from the shelf and finish it. Sometimes leaving a project and picking it up later takes you in a different (and often better!) direction...

You can really make a nice quilt for yourself with all of those 2.5" assorted squares. You could make awesome runners or placements with the fabric from India. Thank you for the chance to win. ReplyDeleteRight now I only have one UFO...a top that needs batting and a back. I stopped as I had to start christmas quilts I made for my grand kids. Usually, I finish what I start, but with the hot weather in the summer, I can't work in my sewing room during the day.. early AM or PM...so I structure my day to be in the sewing room in the AM's nad then in thekitchen cutting etc other wise...so I usually have UFO's in the cutting stage, more so than any other way! But I am happy to say they all eventually get done!

ReplyDeleteI tend to only have 1 project at a time started. I'm kind of OCD about UFO's. Though, right now, I do have 2 started and not finished. I is a pair of pillow shams for my sister that match a sampler quilt I gave her earlier this year. They are pieced, I just need to quilt, and then sew on the back.
ReplyDeleteThe other is a lap quilt for Me using the Pure by Sweetwater line. I have the center pieced, but can't decide what borders to add. So it sits and yells at me until I can find the perfect fabric.

ReplyDeleteOh boy, I have so many UFO's! I'm happy to say that I recently finished a UFO that I've had since I started quilting! I had picked up a panel at Joann's for a baby quilt, thinking that adding large running stitches would be easy, but ended up taking me FOREVER!
ReplyDeleteI've also got a full-size quilt using a Happy Zombie pattern and Violet Craft Peacock lane fabric nearly finished, I just need to add the binding.
I have a few UFO - I am guessing about 10 altogether- even that is too many for me but I like to finish things. 3 of them are quilts that I started in August and 3 more are recent projects. I have so many UFOs that I don't know how many there are any more. I am making it my 2013 resolution to get them finished! I have some in all stages....2 need borders, 1 just needs the blocks sewn together, 1 needs to go to the quilter, and bunches of them are in bags calling my name. Thanks for a great giveaway.

I think that fabric would look wonderful as a set of cushions on any couch - the colours are amazing. Or you could use them to make a fabric necklace.

ReplyDeleteOnly 10 UFO's right now, with mot of them only requiring a few hours work or less to finish. I'm really really good at starting things, not so good at finishing ;)I would very much like to get back to a paper-pieced quilt I'm working on; that one has a LOT of work yet to be done.
ReplyDeleteUFOs galore! Including: a yoga mat bag; a tote bag as a gift; a virtually finished quilt that just needs a little bit of hand-quilting detail; a bunch of batik yo-yos that don't know what they're going to become...etc..
ReplyDeleteI have 1 quilt top, 1 pieced pillow and 1 shirt for my son - those are my only ufo's right now. The clothing for my kids has to be finished in a timely fashion or they will outgrow it before it is done... And I'm just learning to quilt, so maybe that's why I don't have many ufo's yet... I like to think that my "regular" projects in between are just excuses to generate more scraps for my scrappy projects -that's what I love to get back to.

But the one I want to get back to is a scrappy baby quilt that I made using scraps from some that my friend gave me. She passed away recently and I want to quilt it so that I can donate it to our hospital in her name.

ReplyDeleteI've got so many things that I keep meaning to get back to! The one that's been sitting around the longest is a cross-stitch Christmas pillow that I was working on when my father-in-law was still alive...that must mean it's (gulp) 28 years unfinished?? Can that be right?? All that needs doing is a bit of the outline work, and then it needs to be made into a pillow. Naw, it can wait a while longer. ;)

ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful fabric and I love scraps! I have some of mine cut up like that as well. I'm saving fabric for a postage stamp quilt. I have several UFOs and this next year my girlfriend and I are committed to working on our UFOs. I have some embroidery blocks of snowmen that I need to finish and sew into a quilt. That's just one of many, hehe.
